Tennessee Life and Health Insurance Agent Exam
Need of a License: An individual who is acting as an agent or producer needs a license to sell life and health insurance in Tennessee.Who Grants a License: Licenses are granted by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.
Qualifications to receive a License: Individuals who wish to obtain an insurance license in the State of Tennessee:
1. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
2. Be a resident of the state.
3. Complete all prelicensing education.
4. Complete fingerprinting requirements.
5. Make a reservation and pay the examination fee.
6. Pass the examination.
7. Apply for a license.
Prelicensing Education Requirements: Each line of insurance requires 20 hours of prelicensing education from an approved provider. You must present proof of completion at the testing center prior to taking the exam.
Fingerprint Instructions: Each candidate taking a Tennessee Insurance examination must be fingerprinted. Requests for fingerprint-based background checks (TBI and FBI) must be submitted
through the use of the Tennessee Applicant Processing Service (electronically). Fingerprint information can be found at www.tn.gov/commerce/insurance.
Applying for the Producer Exam: It is highly recommended that the Tennessee Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook be reviewed, and special attention be given to the content outlines (available at www.pearsonvue.com), before taking an examination.
The State of Tennessee utilizes Pearson VUE to develop and administer its insurance licensing examination program. Pearson VUE is a leading provider of assessment services to regulatory agencies and national associations. Online reservations are the most efficient way for candidates to schedule their examination. Candidates must go to www.pearsonvue.com/tn/insurance to make an online reservation for an examination. Candidates may call (800) 274-4957 to make an exam reservation by phone.
Test Information: Candidates who pass the examination will receive a score report that reads “pass,” and no numeric score will be reported. Candidates who fail an examination will receive a numeric score. Each examination is based on a detailed content outline of topics, subtopics, and references to applicable state laws, statutes and regulations. How to Apply for the License: After passing the examination, apply for your license by submitting an application electronically through NIPR (www.NIPR.com). If filing electronically, you must wait
forty'eight (48) hours. You can submit a paper application and the $50 filing fee directly to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance at the address below.

License Renewal Requirements: Individual Producer licenses must be renewed every two years and there is a continuing education requirement.
