New Hampshire Electrician Exam
Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in New Hampshire.
Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the New Hampshire Electricians' Board.
Qualifications Needed to Receive a License
Master Electrician: A candidate must have completed at least 8,000 hours of training on the job while supervised by a master electrician before taking the Master Electrician Examination.
A candidate must also have at least one of the following:
- 576 hours of electrical schooling in blocks of 144 hours per year
- An associate or higher degree in an electrical curriculum
- 10 years’ experience as a journeyman or master electrician licensed in another jurisdiction
- Successful completion of the journeyman or master exam in New Hampshire previously
- Up to 2,000 hours of school time in prescribed courses in electrical installations at an approved school may count towards the practical experience requirement.
- Successful completion of the journeyman examination and 2,000 hours’ experience as a journeyman in performing electrical installations prior to the exam.
Journeyman Electrician: A candidate must have completed at least 8,000 hours of training on the job while supervised by a master electrician before taking the Journeyman Electrician Examination.
A candidate must also have at least one of the following:

Exam Requirements: A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.

Master Electrician Exam – The master electrician exam consists of 50 questions on the NEC; 50 questions on practical electrical installations RSA 319-C:2, III; and 25 questions on RSA 319-C and the board's administrative rules. A candidate needs at least a 70% grade to pass.
The exam covers the following subject areas:
- General Knowledge
- 2014 National Electrical Code Services and Service Equipment
- Feeders
- Control Devices
- Motors and Generators
- Special Occupancies, Equipment, and Conditions
- Administrative
- Branch Circuits and Conductors
- RSA 319-C Wiring Methods and Materials
- Equipment and Devices

Who Administers the Test: New Hampshire Electricians’ Board
License Renewal Requirements: Licenses must be renewed every third year before the last day of the month of the licensee's birth.
