Hawaii Massage Therapist License Exam
To get licensed in Hawaii, massage therapists are required to take a massage exam that covers such subjects as anatomy, physiology, pathology and kinesiology. Need of a Massage License: A massage therapist needs a license to practice massage therapy in Hawaii.
Who Grants a License: Licenses are granted by the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Board of Massage Therapy.
Qualifications to receive a License: A candidate needs to complete at least 570 hours of course instruction and training in massage from an approved school or program including:
- 100 hours of massage therapy techniques and theories
- 50 hours of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology
- 420 hours of practical training – this can be satisfied through an apprenticeship program
- CPR certification
The candidate must also pass the Hawaii Massage Therapy Exam that is administered by Prometric testing company.

Applying for the Massage Exam: Candidates can apply to take the Hawaii Massage Therapy Exam online at Prometric.
Test Content: The Hawaii Massage Therapy Exam is a closed-book exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates are given 2 hours to complete the exam.
The exam is divided into 4 content areas:
- Laws and Rules
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Massage Theory
- Clinical Situations
How to Apply for the License: Candidates must provide the Board the following documents: (1) completed application; (2) transcript of completed course of study; (3) criminal background check if you have a prior record ; and (4) copy of unexpired CPR certification card. Fees: There are fees to apply to become a licensed massage therapist.
License Renewal Requirements: A massage therapist must renew her license every two years.
Applicable Regulations: Massage therapists in Hawaii are governed by HAR Chapter 84 and Chapter 452.
