Hawaii Life and Health Insurance Agent Exam
Need of a License: An individual who is acting as an agent or producer needs a license to sell life and health insurance in Hawaii.Who Grants a License: Licenses are granted by the Insurance Section of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
Qualifications to receive a License: Individuals who wish to obtain an insurance license in the State of Hawaii must:
1. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
2. Make a reservation and pay the examination fee.
3. Pass the examination.
4. Apply for a license.
The Hawaii Department of Insurance does not require a specific program of prelicensing education or otherwise prescreen examination candidates.
Applying for the Producer Exam: It is highly recommended that the Hawaii Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook be reviewed, and special attention be given to the content outlines (available at www.pearsonvue.com), before taking an examination.
The State of Hawaii utilizes Pearson VUE to develop and administer its insurance licensing examination program. Pearson VUE is a leading provider of assessment services to regulatory agencies and national associations. Online reservations are the most efficient way for candidates to schedule their examination. Candidates must go to www.pearsonvue.com/hi/insurance to make a reservation for an examination. Candidates may call at (800) 274-2608 to make an examination reservation by phone.
Candidates may fax the Fax Reservation Form, in the back of the handbook, to Pearson VUE at (888) 204-6291, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The completed form should be faxed at least two (2) calendar days before the desired examination date. A confirmation of the reservation will be returned by fax within 24 hours of receipt of the faxed request.
Candidates may take up to two examinations at one session with the exception of the Adjuster and the Personal Lines examinations, which must be taken separately. Candidates who wish to take more than two examinations must schedule additional sessions.
Test Information: When candidates complete the examination, they will receive a score report marked
“pass” or “fail.” Candidates who pass the examination will receive a score report that includes information on how to apply for a license. A score of 75 is required to pass. Candidates who fail the examination will receive a score report that includes a numeric score and diagnostic information relating to the general portion of the examination, as well as information about reexamination. Reservations cannot be made at the test center. Candidates must wait 24 hours before making a reservation for reexamination.

How to Apply for the License: All resident individuals are required to be fingerprinted prior to submitting a license application for initial license. To obtain fingerprints, schedule an appointment online at http://www.fieldprinthawaii.com. Fees collected by FieldPrint include state and federal submission fees. Be sure to select “Insurance Division.” It is recommended that the insurance exam be taken and passed prior to fingerprinting. This will make sure that the fingerprinting result, which has a 90 day effective life span, is still valid when received by the Insurance Division. To assist the Division in the processing of your application, please submit your application within 60 days after being fingerprinted.
After the exam has been passed and fingerprinting completed, apply at http://cca.hawaii.gov/ins/producers/instructions_insurance_license/ or submit a paper application, which includes:
- Form HPL – Hawaii Application for Individual Insurance License. Or NAIC Uniform Application. Submit one with original signature.
- Original passing score report(s) of the Hawaii Insurance Licensing Exam(s).
- Licensing Fees. Make check payable to DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS.

License Renewal Requirements: Individual Producer licenses must be renewed every two years and there is a continuing education requirement.
